The Brozman Baritone Santa Cruz Guitar
Instruments Main Page

Bob Brozman designed this special guitar with Santa Cruz Guitar Company founder Richard Hoover, to create a unique new voice in acoustic guitar music. Combining a 27" scale-length, appropriate tone woods, and structural design elements, Bob and SCGC have created an instrument that is profound and deep-sounding yet has incredible speed of response and beautifully defined treble. An incredible instrument for open tuning blues and slack key guitar styles, yet perfectly suited for standard tunings as well.

The body combines structural and tonal concepts from 3 classic 1920s instruments: the 12-fret dreadnought shape, the sloped and tapering back from Weissenborn, and the "braced-under-tension" concept from Larson Bros. Instruments. The 12-fret Dreadnought body size is ideal for open tunings with plenty of room for bass. The tapering back, as inspired by Weissenborn guitars, defeats the most common weakness of dreadnoughts - lack of treble - by focusing the treble frequencies and speeding up their departure from the soundhole. Bracing under tension, as in the vintage Mauer, Euphonon, and Dyer guitars, further speeds up the response - the notes come out of the guitar "faster" because the very slightly arched braces keep the top slightly "sprung," as opposed to "stiff." The result is a guitar that actually delivers massive amounts of bass and midrange, as you would expect. Moreover, unlike most large-bodied guitars, the Brozman Baritone has great treble projection, and the volume continues to increase the higher up the neck you go!

This instrument's top is German spruce of the highest grade. The wood for the back and sides is highly figured Hawaiian koa wood. It is also available with mahogany back and sides, at a lower price. It has an ebony fingerboard, and is fretted consistently from top to bottom, as are all Santa Cruz guitars.

Bob has recorded extensively with this guitar, and it can be heard on JIN JIN, GET TOGETHER, and FOUR HANDS SWEET AND HOT, METRIC TIME, and BLUES REFLEX. Bob has used his baritone Santa Cruz on tours with Takashi Hirayasu and Ledward Kaapana, and since then, both Takashi and Kaapana have each obtained and recorded with Baritone models of their own. They can be heard playing their Baritones on these releases: NANKURU NAISA and IN THE SADDLE.

The Bob Brozman Baritone is available worldwide from Bob directly, as well as in better guitar shops. Email Bob to order.
