Bob Brozman and Papua New Guinea Stringbands: Songs of the Volcano (4 Stars)
By NIGEL WILLIAMSON
|
The global guitarist Brozman docks his boat in Papua New Guinea for Songs of the Volcano — so named because Rabaul, the town where it was recorded, has been destroyed by an eruption twice in the past century. The album joyously explores the music of the indigenous string bands that grew up playing the guitars and ukuleles left by 19th-century sailors.
There is genuine virtuosity here, but it is also raw and earthily exempt from any commercial consideration. The sunny, upbeat rhythms reflect an idyllic lifestyle still untroubled by Western materialism. The result is a sheer delight.
