Prolific guitarist Bob Brozman’s latest voyage in his ongoing global music quest takes him to Papua, New Guinea, where he joins several area bands for a series of inspiring, historic performances.
Operating in a nation virtually devoid of any official music industry or apparatus, Brozman still forged the mutually beneficial partnership across cultural lines that has been his trademark for decades. The CD/DVD presents 16 audio performances that mix aspects of Hawaiian, Caribbean and Mexican idioms, yet also has its own special flair.
The DVD provides visual drama and affirmation of both Brozman’s interactive success with the various ensembles, and this seldom heard music’s timeless beauty and appeal.
Though operating in an ensemble-dominated rather than soloist-driven genre, these Papua New Guinea stringbands deliver haunting, enchanting fare that’s nicely augmented by Brozman’s spirited playing.
