CD Review: DIGDIG
IT TAKES deep pockets to keep pace with the recording schedule of the guitarist-cum-musicologist Bob Brozman. His visit to Reunion Island, however, produces an unmissable encounter with a local luminary, René Lacaille, a multi-instrumentalist and singer for whom the term one-man band would be an understatement. The flair and commitment of the musicians is unmistakable. Brozman is the friendly face of globalisation, throwing Hawaiian and bottleneck guitar into the cocktail, while Lacaille spins elegant dance figures on his accordion. The result is a series of infectious yet understated tunes, driven by discreet percussion, that crisscrosses the oceans, leaving the listener bewildered but exhilarated. Three stars
