CD Review: MAHIMA
Hawaiian guitarist Bob Brozman's collaborations have covered the world; now he's decided to get down with Calcutta slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya, and as usual the outcome is as wonderful as it's weird. Bhattacharya's customized instrument blends the sitar's cry with slide's familiar deep-South wall; his brother and sister contribute tabla and vocals respectively. But this album is truly collaborative, from the gorgeous, plaintive ripple of Maa to the exhilarating pace of Bana Mali. At times it's very Indian, at others not - the cleverly named Lullabai has a country twang - but there's not a dull moment.
