CD Review: MAHIMA
Slide guitar pioneer Debashish Bhattacharya starts out his new fusion release, Mahima (Riverboat Records), with "Bahu Dur Dur," a brisk, imaginative piece that inspires the global wandering alluded to its Bengali lyrics sung by the artist's sister, Sutapa. The album moves from the delicate rumination of " Maa" to the energetic whimsy of "Digi Digi Dom Dom," dedicated to Bhattacharya's beloved Kolkata, and to an upbeat ode to Goa's Portuguese influences on "Konkani Memories."
Here, Bhattacharya teams up with Bob Brozman, one of the world's leading authorities on the Hawaiian slide guitar. Brozman believes that the best artistic collaboration arises in total cultural immersion - the artists lived, ate and cooked together through the duration of the production of the album. The result is a free-flowing, yet well-balanced, blend of East and West in which one style perfectly complements the other.
