Papua New Guinea Stringbands and Bob Brozman: Songs of the Volcano
By MARTY LIPP
|
Bob Brozman is a world-hopping guitarist who strives to bring attention to local musicians with whom he records. On his latest, he sets his National steel guitar down amid several big guitar bands of Papua New Guinea. The album's songs all have large group harmonies and move forward with the power of steadily strummed guitars. The result is music that has an undeniable naïvete and rustic charm, even if it lacks the sophisticated production to which Western listeners are accustomed. Brozman's guitar threads itself among the New Guineans', adding an extra layer, though the album really belongs to the bands. For some, the insistent strumming may seem one dimensional, but others will be won over by the sound, which at times feels like an ancestor of the Beach Boys. The package also includes a DVD documentary on Brozman's trek to the islands, the stringbands themselves and their island, which was devastated by a volcano in 1994. Overall, the package might not be ready for the pop charts, but it should bring deserved attention to a wonderful local tradition and culture.
