CD Review: MAHIMA
Guitarist Ry Cooder is internationally celebrated for his global collaborations, but there is another American guitarist, Bob Brozman, with a track record just as impressive.
In the past few years, Brozman, who plays Hawaiian slide guitar, has recorded with a kora player from Guinea, a sanshin (banjo) player from Okinawa, an accordionist from La Réunion and now a superlative slide guitarist from India.
Calcutta-born Bhattacharya gave his first guitar recital aged four and he has developed an Indian slide guitar with the capabilities of traditional Indian instruments like the sitar or vina.
He is a masterful player and wonderfully matched by Brozman; you frequently can't tell who is playing what.
The music is ecstatic and uplifting - and the opening track with vocals by Sutapa Bhattacharya is gorgeously catchy.
