CD Review: FOUR HANDS SWEET and HOT
Dazzling technique from, and exquisite interplay between, two superb guitar players makes this album a real treat. Slack key guitarist Cyril Pahinui is joined by acoustic steel guitarist Bob Brozman, and they take on classic material from Pahinui's Hawaiian Islands homeland. The repertoire runs the gamut from a spirited, fun-filled "Hawaiian Cowboy" (in brief medley with the theme from television's "Bonanza"), to slow, beautiful warm love songs such as "Wai Ulu," to an uptempo, striking original piece by the duo, "LBC Slack Key," which is a tribute to another slack key guitarist, their friend Led Kaapana. "Wai'alae" surely sounds Hawaiian, yet it's based on a Mexican song and is given a full Latin rhythmic treatment - you can almost hear the Mexican harps. Another cross-cultural mix brings Hawaiian influences to the swing/jazz number "Coquette." Pahinui adds vocals to two (not three, as the jewel box says) selections on this 66-minute recording. Extensive notes on each song, guitar tunings used, and brief biographies round out a fine CD.
