CD Review: MAHIMA
The American guitarist Bob Brozman, a frequent visitor to these parts, started out as a blues player but has found more fruitful musical ground in collaborations with musicians from different traditions. Following work with Takashi Hirayasu from Okinawa and Rene Lacaille from La Reunion, he pits the familiar Hawaiian guitar style against the lesser known Hindustani slide guitar tradition of Bhattacharya.
If the slip and slide of metal on strings is your thing, this is unadulterated joy. Some cross-cultural experiments thrive on conflict, others on synergy. This, like Ry Cooder's classic Talking Timbuktu disc with Ali Farka Toure, is of the latter kind. The interplay has that magic of two virtuosi delighting in each other's musical company.
And it's not all guitars either, with strong vocals and tabla too. **** (Four Stars)
