CD Review: IN THE SADDLE
Slack key guitar master Led Kaapana and steel slide player Bob Brozman reaffirm their extraordinary musical rapport with this mellifluous second set of Hawaiian soul lullabies. Talk about mellow tunes -- it's a wonder the DEA doesn't issue a crackdown! The duet format suits these two virtuosos delightfully, with Brozman's fluid swells and bluesy melodies weaving amiably in and out of Kaapana's various tunings. Although they mostly choose the instrumental path here, Kaapana's sustained falsetto on "Meleana E" just about carries you away on a balmy South Pacific breeze. He employs a 12-string guitar for a richer sonority on the leisurely "Kukuna O Ka La," while "Aloha Ia O Wai'anae" flits along like tropical bluegrass. The title track is just as jaunty, with Kaapana picking out cartoon-like airs on his ukulele. A joy for the globe-savvy sound explorer and acoustic folk aficionado alike.
